introduction

During our first audience, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was kind enough to commend us on the uniqueness of our programme of studies, and advised us not to compromise that by duplicating the work being done by other organisations.

Since the inception of AMI a number of organisations, governmental and semi-governmental, have sprung up such as the Tibetan Parliamentary and Policy Research Centre on January 1994 and the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy on May 4, 1996, Therefore, in the light of these new circumstances, the directors of AMI decided to drop its programmes of Democracy and Peace Studies, and ancillary studies. Two other factors, the inadequacy of staff and resources at AMI, further contributed to our decision. We also discontinued our programme of Environmental Studies, since the Tibetan government had already established desk for that purpose.

At the same time we have added two new programmes that did not exist in our plans since there was a tremendous need for them in our society. Our Cartographic Studies and Publishing and Design Programme have not only been launched but have scored some initial successes.
