Seminar on Rendering of Foreign Names & Terms in Tibetan
August 22, 1997

  Dharamshala, India
Hotel Tibet Conference Room

Twenty scholars and translators met to discuss the problems and solutions to rendering foreign words, scientific, technical and other terms in the Tibetan language. Since AMI had also translated a number of Western books into Tibetan, opinion and feedback was sought from the participants on the merits and failings of these translations.

The translation of Aung San Suu Kyi's Freedom from Fear, and Palden Gyal's The Offering and Other Poems were also launched on the occasion.

Chaired by Ladakhi scholar Lobsang Jamspal of Columbia University, New York (advisor to the Tibetan Classics Translator's Guild of New York) AMI organised this day long seminar to discuss the proliferation of new and unorthodox spelling of Tibetan words from inside Tibet, in exile and elsewhere, and what could be done to bring about some uniformity to Tibetan orthography. The seminar was attended by over twenty-five Tibetan journalists, editors, publishers and government officials.

  Tibet in the Post-Deng Era
May 17 to 18, 1994

  Dharamshala, India
Department of Information and International Relations

This seminar was held under our Occupied Tibet Studies Programme. A number of Tibetan China-experts contributed papers on: Life of Deng Xiaoping, Changes in China & Implications for Tibet, China after Deng: Scenarios & Strategies, Literary and Cultural Conjectures on Changes in China, No Freedom on a Plate: Scenarios in Post-Deng Tibet.

The papers and the discussions clearly brought out the complexities of China's many problems including leadership succession, corruption, economic disparity, social dislocation and ideological bankruptcy. Many suggestions were also presented for the Tibetan government and people to benefit from the impending crisis in China.

All the China experts at his seminar were near unanimous in their conclusion that the death of Deng Xiaopeng would not alter Chinese policies in Tibet nor contribute to any discernable changes in Sino-Tibetan relationships.

The proceedings of this seminar have been published in 1995. See our books published under the Occupied Tibet Series for more information.

  First Seminar on Tibetan Literature
February 19, 1994

  Dharamshala, India
Staff Mess of the Central Tibetan Administration

The two themes of the seminar were:

Contemporary Development in Tibetan Literature

Suggestions for the improvement of the literary journal Jang-zhon

About fifty writers, scholars and interested people attended and there was energetic discussion and debate for and against modern writing as opposed to classical writing; also on the need for a writing that would better express the problems of Tibetans in this present day. There were also many ideas for making Jang-zhon a more interesting and relevant journal. On this occasion the 6th issue of Jang-zhon was launched by Kalön Sonam Topgyal, Minister of Home Affairs. This is the first issue of the journal under AMI management.
